By 1928, the rebuilt and higher off the water 2,800-foot wooden drawbridge across Card Sound was completed. Emil Christensen, who was appointed General Manager of the E&LS after the death of George W. Construction began in 1837, the year the Michigan became a state. In the summer of 1898 they put out a very interesting book, consisting of over 175 pages, showing many beautiful pictures of the wonderful scenery for which this road is noted. The UP officials scoffed and bet that they couldn't.

There were no official services, as anyone could bring a vehicle on the railway by paying a toll. Riding Tacoma Link is free and the cars operate weekdays from 5:30 am to 10pm on 20 and 10 minute headways. Given these conditions the NP decided to locate its depot facilities north of Yakima City in a new town site called North Yakima. The Flushing Railroad Company was organized in 1852, to build a road from Hunter's Point to the village of Flushing. Tens of thousands of men and 450 tons of explosives overcame harsh and challenging climate and geography to create “the railway built of gold.” The WP&YR climbs almost 3000 feet in just 20 miles and features steep grades of up to 3.9%, cliff-hanging turns of 16 degrees, two tunnels and numerous bridges and trestles.

More and more automobiles were registered each year. Both lines were purchased from the Oregon Short Line Railroad, which had purchased the Utah and Pacific line in 1901. The toll was $3.50 for vehicles under 14 feet up to $6.50 for vehicles over 16 feet, driver included. Greater hope seems to be held out for a resumption of the works at Cressona in the near future than for the Schuylkill Haven Car Shops. I will see my father who is 84 at Christmas. In addition to providing the much-needed labor force to raise and harvest Kentucky tobacco and hemp, Kentucky slaves worked in salt mines, in iron works, and on bridge and road construction.
